L’avers représente la façade du monastère de Santa Maria d’Alcobaça dans un cercle en bas de la pièce. Le « Monastero de Alcobaça » est inscrit au Patrimoine Mondial depuis 1989. Au dessus figure l’emblème du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco.

Le revers représente les armoiries du Portugal. Au dessus l’inscription « Republica Portuguesa » et en dessous le millésime ainsi que la valeur faciale 5 euro encerclée. Il s’agit de la 6ème pièce de la série « Patrimonio Mundial ».
