Around the scroll are the twelve stars of the European Community. At the centre of the coin is the heraldic lion, as it appears on the coat of arms of Finland: a golden lion crowned on a gules background, with a silver right arm brandishing a sword, trampling a scimitar, surrounded by nine roses symbolising nine former Finnish provinces. The letter "M" appears below the scimitar hilt. The date is at nine o'clock, under the lion's claws.
