La christianisation sera l\u2019\u0153uvre de Saint Patrick au V<sup>e<\/sup>\u00a0si\u00e8cle, avec la fondation de puissants monast\u00e8res, qui se placent dans la d\u00e9pendance de Rome.<\/p><p>\u00c0 partir de Henri II, en 1169, les rois anglais affirment leur souverainet\u00e9.<\/p><p>La situation se complique \u00e0 partir du schisme anglican de Henri VIII, qui se proclame chef de l\u2019\u00e9glise d\u2019Irlande et roi d\u2019Irlande en 1541. D\u00e8s lors, les r\u00e9voltes se multiplient.<\/p><p>C\u2019est Cromwell qui va, au prix de grands massacres apr\u00e8s 1649, faire de l\u2019Irlande une simple colonie anglaise.<\/p><p>Les irlandais catholiques sont trait\u00e9s comme des citoyens de seconde zone.<\/p><p>La r\u00e9volte des colons am\u00e9ricains am\u00e8ne des concessions anglaises, et certains r\u00eavent d\u2019une union irlandaise de toutes confessions. Mais Londres supprime le Parlement de Dublin en 1801.<\/p><p>Le nationalisme irlandais se trouve amplifi\u00e9 par le terrible drame de la grande famine (1845-49). 1,3 millions d\u2019Irlandais \u00e9migrent, surtout aux \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/p><p>La contestation s\u00e9paratiste devient violente.
