  • History (to be translated)

L’or afflue de toute l’Europe reconnaissante.

Malta and the Euro
  • Engagement in ERM II
Like the ten new members of 2004, Malta was committed adopting the Euro.
The country was faithful to this engagement by adhering on May 2, 2005 to the convergence mechanism (ERM II).
Its economic results of 2004 were still insufficient in terms of public deficit and rough debt, but the visible advances of 2005 finally allowed the introduction of the Euro on January 1, 2008.
The Central Bank of Malta quickly showed its serenity and its enthusiasm with respect to the Euro; the double circulation period was of one month. The parity of the lira in ERM II: €1 = MTL 0.429300 was in line with the final parity, Malta having chosen to be in ERM II without any fluctuation. Also to be noticed that it is the only country with Cyprus to have a currency of higher value than that of the Euro.
  • The minting workshop and mintmarks

Malta does not have a minting workshop; the Mint of Paris was selected in October 2006 to strike the Maltese Euros. France does not seem to be authorized to let figure its mintmarks, we thus find, as for the Greek coins of French manufacturing, the letter F who appears in the 6 o’clock star of the outer ring. The Mint of Paris definitely lost markets in 2009, because after Luxembourg, it is the turn of the Maltese market. Indeed, on the €2 common commemorative coin relating to the 10th anniversary of the Euro, these are the mintmarks of the workshop of Utrecht in the Netherlands that one can find. For the time being, we do not yet know if the 2009 series will also be struck by this workshop, but the odds are that the answer is yes.

  • The coins
The choice of the national side was carried out in two stages:
- a first contest proposed four themes (prehistoric Malta, Renaissance, Maltese identity and the Maltese archipelago - three choices were proposed on each theme). The theme “archipelago” was eliminated, but the Malteses voted by plebiscite a theme not suggested: the Maltese cross.
- A second competition was organized to again eliminate one from the four remaining topics: it is Malta Rebirth which was turned down. Moreover, taking into account of its religious nature, it is probable that it would have been refused by the ECB.
The Maltese coins thus have finally for national sides:

- 1, 2 and 5 cent: the altar of Mnajdra prehistoric temple, one of the major paleolithic sites of the archipelago (inscription MALTA under the altar)
- 10, 20 and 50 cent : the blazon such as it is reproduced today on all the coins in Lira (inscription REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA at the bottom of the blazon, and MALTA on the left of the blazon)
- €1 and €2: the eight-pointed Maltese cross (inscription MALTA between the upper points)

The €2 commemorative coins

The common issue of the commemorative coin “10th anniversary of EMU”, gives Malta the opportunity to propose its first €2 commemorative coin.

The country letter of the Maltese banknotes is the F.
  • Polemic...
The central bank of Malta had to deal with two polemics:
- the first one concerning a preferential system of distribution of the first Maltese Euro BU sets; as you can see it on opposite advertising, the minting institute proposed in 2006 with its boxed set in Maltese Mils a “preferential certificate” giving right, with the certificate of the boxed sets 2005 and 2007, to purchase in priority the first FDC Maltese set in Euro (in 2008). We had then denounced this practical in the magazine “Bulletin Numismatique” nr 20: http://www.amisdeleuro.org/documents.php?doc_id=223&lg=fr

- the second polemic relates to the choice of the national sides… Indeed, this one was carried out by surcharged SMS survey from May 29 to June 9, 2006 in order to eliminate one of the four sides proposed initially; a not very orthodox method which took place in our article “Welcome in Malta Academy!” in the magazine “Bulletin Numismatique” nr 023: http://www.amisdeleuro.org/documents.php?doc_id=226&lg=fr ; you can find the text of the Maltese advertisement here.
